Norris House Presidents’ Day Tour (Feb. 12-14)

Get to know Senator Norris and discover the seven presidents he served alongside.

Celebrate Presidents’ Day with a journey through American leadership at the George Norris State Historic Site. From February 12th–14th, 1pm-5pm, join us for a guided tour exploring the presidents with whom Senator George W. Norris served alongside—and the relationships he had with each of them.

The tour highlights Norris’s long and influential career, as he navigated the ever-changing political landscapes of seven presidential administrations: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Experience Norris’s fascinating story: a small-town Nebraskan who encouraged by his neighbors to represent Nebraska, Norris won election to the U.S. House of Representatives and headed to Washington, D.C. To guide himself in this new role, he turned to a law school thesis he had written on Abraham Lincoln, modeling his leadership after the 16th president.

As a special keepsake, each participant will receive a penny at the end of the tour, courtesy of the Norris Institute. A small but meaningful reminder of Lincoln’s influence on Norris and on American democracy.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
