Uncover history at Red Cloud Agency with our History Nebraska archeologists! Join us for a weekend community dig to help uncover the history of this important Nebraska historical site.

Participants will meet new people, learn new techniques, and make new discoveries all under the supervision of professional History Nebraska archeologists.

Registration costs are $50 per person for one day and $80 for both days of the dig. History Nebraska members will receive a discount. Members check your email for a discount code.

Lunch and all tools will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own water, hat, gloves, etc. Lodging is not included but can be found at nearby Fort Robinson as well as Chadron, and Crawford. 

The minimum age for participants is 16 years.

Participants can also enjoy two free History Nebraska events at Fort Robinson this same weekend. Saturday evening will feature a talk on recent archeological work and a chance to get artifacts identified by History Nebraska archeologists. On Sunday afternoon there will be a Free Family Fun Day at the Veterinary Hospital at Fort Robinson.

The Red Cloud Community Dig is part of Nebraska Archeology Month, a statewide celebration organized by the Nebraska Association of Professional Archeologists.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.

