BACKGROUND NOTE



Optimist International is a service club organization made up of nearly three thousand local clubs around the world.  Individual clubs raise their own funds and conduct service projects to improve the lives of children in their community.  Typical service projects include sponsoring youth athletic leagues, conducting essay and oratory contests for youth scholarships, and supporting other activities at local schools.  The Evening Optimist Club of Lincoln, Nebraska, was chartered in 1961.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of two boxes of records of the Evening Optimist Club of Lincoln, Nebraska.  Records include minutes of meetings, monthly reports, weekly bulletins, membership information, publicity, etc., dating from 1961 to 1974.  Included in the last folder of collection are various items relating to the Gateway Optimist Club of Lincoln.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
