BACKGROUND NOTE
John Smith Stull was born in McHenry County, Illinois on May 6, 1842 and grew up on a farm near Marengo. When he reached the age of twenty-one, Stull enlisted as private in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. He served for three years being discharged as a Corporal in 1865. After the war, Stull taught school back in Illinois. He then entered the law college at Ann Arbor, Michigan, graduating in 1870. The following year he moved to Nebraska, locating at Brownville where he set up his legal practice.
For a brief time, Stull was in partnership with T. L. Schick. He was later elected Mayor of Brownville and Police Judge. In 1877, he was elected County Judge, a position he retained for an additional three terms. During his tenure as County Judge, the Nemaha County seat was moved to Auburn and Stull relocated there. After serving one term as County Attorney, Stull was elected Judge of the First Judicial District in 1895 and was re-elected in 1899. His last term expired in 1899.
John Stull was married on May 21, 1879 to Lillie B. Cecil. Three children were born to them. Judge Stull died in Auburn on June 18. 1910.

This collection consists of two letterpress books dating from 1893-1894. The volumes relate to the legal practice of John S. Stull of Auburn, Nebraska. The letterpress books contain the correspondence written by Stull for the period April 13, 1893 to April 26, 1894. These volumes are indexed alphabetically by name of correspondent and the letters are arranged chronologically. The correspondence pertains to Stull’s law practice and includes information on his legal tactics and casework. A small amount of personal correspondence is included
