Alva M. Johnston was born in Frost, Ohio, February 15, 1872. At the age of 16 he came to the Doniphan, Nebraska, area and began farming for the Martin family. Around this time he also attended the Grand Island Business College. After his marriage to Viola Martin, January 16, 1901, he established farming operations on the Martin homestead. In 1937 Johnson served as a member of the last Bicameral Legislature and was elected to the first Unicameral in 1939, a body which he was instrumental in organizing. He served on the Legislature's Public Works Committee. Alva Johnston died October 22, 1953. He was survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Edward Stulken of Doniphan and Robert L. Johnston of Neligh.

This collection consists of two folders of manuscript material containing correspondence (1937-1939) and minutes of the Public Works Committee (1939). This collection relates to the legislative career of Alva M. Johnston from Hall County. The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence.
