BACKGROUND NOTE

The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association (PHSA) started out as an informal reunion on December 7, 1958 of eleven survivors to commemorate the 17^th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  First conceived by Sam Kronberger and Mark Ferris, these survivors decided to start an official organization at their next reunion on December 7, 1959.  Starting out in California, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association decided to expand into a national organization in 1960.

By December of 1962, thirty-seven (37) states, including Nebraska, had joined the PHSA.  Jack Slocum was appointed the first State Chairman for Nebraska.  Since that time, members of the Nebraska Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association have participated in state and national conventions to honor their fallen comrades and commemorate the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The mission of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association is:

1. 1. to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States

1. 1. to collate, preserve, and encourage the study of historical episodes, chronicles, mementos, and events pertaining to “The Day of Infamy, 7 December 1941,” and  in  particular those memories and records of patriotic service performed by the heroic Pearl Harbor survivors and nonsurvivors

1. 1. to shield from neglect the graves, past and future, of those who served at Pearl Harbor on such day.

1. 1. to stimulate communities and political subdivisions into taking more interest in the affairs and future of the United States in order to keep our nation alert.

1. 1. to fight unceasingly for our national security in order to protect the United States from enemies within and without our border.

1. 1. to preserve the American way of life and to foster the spirit and practice of Americanism.

1. 1. to instill love of country and flag and to promote soundness of mind and body in the youth of our nation.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of the records of, and materials collected by, the Nebraska Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.  The materials relate to the history of the organization and their efforts to document and preserve items relating to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The scrapbooks in the collection contain various photographs.  For additional photographs, see RG5541.PH.
