Young Jo Ann Grimes poses with a toy sewing machine in Sterling, Nebraska in 1929.  Some children learned machine-sewing skills by playing with working toy sewing machines before graduating to the full-size versions.

Several toy sewing machines are now on display at the Nebraska History Museum in a new exhibit. Color Quest: Exploring Nebraska’s Colorful Quilts opens today.

Combining history and whimsy, Color Quest visitors will learn about color theory and Nebraska history, while enjoying a variety of hands-on activities. This family-friendly exhibit incorporates multiple interactives including puzzles, a stitching activity, and a quilt tying activity. Follow colorful windmill graphics around the gallery for an engaging tour of the exhibit. When you need a break, take a seat on one of the enormous spools of thread.

Color Quest runs through January 5, 2019.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
