Historic Sites Manager

History Nebraska is seeking a dynamic and visitor-focused individual to serve as Historic Site Manager, who will oversee the daily operations of the Fort Robinson History Center. As a member of the Historic Sites team, this position is accountable for interpretation, education (both on-site and digital), and coordination of special events and activities related to the site. The Historic Site Manager is to promote History Nebraska’s mission by sharing the impactful histories of Fort Robinson with the community and across the state.

Fort Robinson State Historical Site near Crawford, Nebraska, is one of the most significant places of the American West. It saw the creation of the Red Cloud agency, the death of Crazy Horse, the deployment of Buffalo Soldiers, a German POW camp, a WWII dog training program, and much more. The grounds include 14 historic structures inside a visually stunning state park and National Historic Landmark.

History Nebraska is a statewide educational institution that connects people to the past through its library and research center, conservation facility, interpretive sites, and the state archeology and historic preservation offices. History Nebraska’s objective is to become the most engaging and relevant state historical society in the nation.

Examples of Work

  • Manages the daily operations of the site, including but not limited to opening and closing procedures, ordering supplies, ensuring the building is visitor-ready and communicating needs to appropriate staff.
  • Plans, organizes and executes activities at the historic site.
  • Serves as liaison with the community and builds new relations statewide.
  • Participates as a member of several process teams in planning and implementing a quality visitor experience.
  • Recruits, trains and supervises volunteers and seasonal staff.
  • Supervises and collaborates with onsite maintenance to ensure the preservation and safety of our facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: helping other departments, participating in interdepartmental committees and working groups; participating in community outreach events.

Qualifications / Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Coursework/Training or experience in customer assistance, public relations, event planning, sales, recreation, Nebraska history, supervision, or working directly with the public. OR Post high school coursework/training in social/behavioral science or business administration.

Preferred: A bachelor's degree in public history, anthropology, museum studies, or related field. Experience working in a cultural organization or historic setting is preferred.

Other Requirements: Ability to drive state vehicle or provide independent transportation.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
