SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains materials concerning the publication of the article, “Pioneering on the Niobrara at Meadville,” in Nebraska History, vol. 34, no. 2. Nellie B. Hulshizer of Ainsworth, Nebraska, writes about the lives of her grandfather, Merritt Mead and his wife Sarah, particularly when they were living in Thayer, Brown, and Keya Paha Counties in Nebraska from the 1870s to the early 1900s. Hulshizer writes about their family and neighbors, homesteading, weather, health, and vigilance committees. Noted was the establishment of Meadville, Nebraska, named after Merritt Mead.

The collection also includes correspondence between Hulshizer and Harry Robinson of the Nebraska State Historical Society in regards to editing the article. One letter lists names of homesteaders and land description in the Meadville vicinity along with lists of county officials for Brown County in 1883 and Keya Paha County in 1885. Included are two critical reviews of the Hulshizer manuscript by Loreine Dalton and Jack Harrington assessing whether it should be published.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
