Nebraska History Spotlight: The Museum of Nebraska Major League Baseball

The idea for the Museum of Nebraska Major League Baseball (MNMLB) originated in 1991 when St. Paul, Nebraska, began a celebration to honor the local hero, Grover Cleveland Alexander. A display about Grover Cleveland Alexander was dedicated that first year, and spurred the idea to create displays for all Nebraska Major League Baseball “Hall of Famers.” The museum today features displays honoring “Wahoo Sam” Crawford, Bob Gibson, Richie Ashburn, and others. The museum also has a roster wall that holds plaques with the names of each player identified as contributing to Major League Baseball.

The museum is owned and operated by the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. The Museum Baseball Committee is a subcommittee of the chamber, and its members are dedicated to collecting baseball materials that focus on the careers of players, managers, and coaches who have contributed to Major League Baseball. “The Purpose of the Nebraska Museum of Major League Baseball is to identify and recognize all of the Nebraskans who have reached and played in at least one inning of Major League Baseball since the introduction of professional baseball.”

The most important future MNMLB plans include selecting the grand marshals for the annually held Grover Cleveland Alexander Days for 2026 and 2027. Numerous players in the past years have attended GCA days to be the Grand Marshal, including Jackie Brandt, Lee Tate, Bob Cerv, and more.

The most important item held by the MNMLB today is a baseball signed by Grover Cleveland Alexander and the rest of the 1926 World Series-winning team, the St. Louis Cardinals. The ball was given by Grover to a gentleman from St. Paul. Grover was born on a farm near Elba, Nebraska, and came back after his career to make St. Paul, Nebraska, his home. They also hold other memorabilia relating to Grover Cleveland Alexander.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
