SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one item, a reminiscence by A.A. Keith entitled, “Indian Raid in 1878 under Cheyenne Chief Dull Knife.” Keith, a horse wrangler on a cattle drive along the Texas Trail, gives an account of life on a cattle drive between Elsworth, Kansas, and Kearney, Nebraska. He describes conflicts with Cheyenne Indians, as well as imprisonment of the Northern Cheyenne at Fort Robinson, Nebraska.

Note:  The History Nebraska collections include various materials relating to Dull Knife and the Cheyenne Outbreak of 1878.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
