BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born in 1809, Alexander Culbertson went to work for the American Fur Company in 1829. He was in charge of trade at Fort Mckenzie, Dakota until 1840 then Fort Union and Fort Laramie. He established Fort Benton, the first permanent settlement in Montana and married Na-Ta-Wis-Cha a Blackfoot maiden about 1840. In 1851 he was appointed as interpreter and special agent of the U.S. Government. He died August 27, 1879 and is buried at Orleans, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection contains miscellaneous research correspondence written in 1918, 1941, and 1950-1951. The letters relate to Alexander Culbertson, to his life as a fur trader in Montana, and to his family. Bibliographical sources are given for further information about Culbertson. Correspondents include A.E. Sheldon, Hugh Butler, Charles Kessler, W.R. McGeachin and Ernest S. Griffith.
