BACKGROUND NOTE
Alfred H. Burr, the son of George and Virginia Hamlin Burr, was born on November 22, 1890, at Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio. In 1905, the family moved to Paragould, Arkansas. Burr received his early education in the public schools, graduating from Paragould High School in 1909. In 1914, he received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University where he was affiliated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. On October 26, 1914, Burr married Hazel Edna Wilson of Little Rock, Arkansas. The Burrs were to have two children, William Alfred, and Mary Ann. William Alfred later lost his life aboard the Harry Luckenbach when it was sunk by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic in 1943.
Following his graduation from Vanderbilt, Burr practiced law with the firm of Burr, Stewart & Burr in Paragould from 1914 until 1917. On August 27, 1917, he enlisted in the service and re-enlisted in 1918, serving until discharged in February of that year. Following World War I, Burr became the secretary-treasurer of the W.W. Wilson Stave Company of North Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1920. During this period Burr began compiling an extensive family genealogy.
Alfred H. Burr was affiliated with the Second Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, Son’s of The American Revolution, Son’s of the Confederate Veterans, the Hugenot Society, The American Legion, the New England Historical Genealogical Society, and the Hugenot Society of South Carolina. Alfred H. Burr moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, in October of 1945. He died on July 29, 1978.
