BACKGROUND NOTE

Alice Ann Lockwood was born at Geneva, New York, on March 2, 1844.  The Lockwood family moved to Nebraska in 1857, settling near Nemaha City in Nemaha County.  Alice was a strong anti-drink advocate, later becoming a leader in the prohibition and temperance movements.  She married John S. Minick in 1865.  After John’s death in 1885, Alice inherited a sizeable estate.  She decided to get her law degree in order to better understand and manage the estate.  Graduating in 1892, Alice Minick was the first female graduate of the University of Nebraska Law College.  She was the fourteenth woman admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court on January 18, 1897.  Alice Minick was also a prolific writer and historian of Brownville and Nemaha County.  She died in 1939 and is buried next to her husband in Walnut Grove Cemetery at Brownville, Nebraska.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
