BACKGROUND NOTE
Alice Cunningham Fletcher was an anthropologist and ethnologist who spent much of her career at the Peabody Museum at Harvard University. Known for her work studying and documenting American Indian culture, Fletcher had a long personal and professional association with Francis La Flesche and the La Flesche family.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of three reels of microfilm containing copies of Alice Cunningham Fletcher’s correspondence dating from 1886-1893. The letters relate to American Indian life, particularly the Omaha and Nez Perce tribes, and the La Flesche Family, particularly to Francis La Flesche. Francis La Flesche served as an anthropologist with the Bureau of American Ethnology.
