BACKGROUND NOTE

Articles of Incorporation for the Antelope County Building and Loan Association at Elgin, Nebraska, were filed with the Antelope County Clerk on October 8, 1923.  The purpose of the association was to raise money to be loaned amongst its members.  The initial officers of the association included George N. Seymour, president; Ray Swanson and George Gribble, vice-presidents; Henry B. McCampbell, secretary; and R.C. Huffman, treasurer.  Business of the association was conducted by a board of nine directors, elected by the members.

Financial instability of the Great Depression soon made the association insolvent and it was unable to meet requests for withdrawals without preferring creditors.  Several dedicated directors struggled to keep the association going, hoping they could restore solvency to the association by no longer taking a salary.  By November 30, 1940, the association had paid all outstanding bills and taxes and had enough money to pay a 5% liquidating dividend to members.  But, due to real estate prices at the time, the association decided to continue.  It wasn’t until a members meeting held on October 3, 1946, that the membership voted to liquidate and close the association.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
