BACKGROUND NOTE
Born at Fairbury, Nebraska, on August 15, 1924, Bernard Walter Nider grew up in Plymouth, Nebraska. He graduated from Plymouth High School and attended the University of Nebraska. Nider joined the U.S. Army in March of 1943 and served with the 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He was one of thousands of soldiers to storm Omaha Beach at Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. After the war, Nider returned to Nebraska and married Mary Humphrey in 1948. The couple had five children. Nider worked as a licensed civil engineer. He worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for a time, and was president of Nider-Jergensen Construction Company. Nider also served as past president of the Nebraska Association of General Contractors and was a member of the American Legion Post #3, VFW Post 3077 at Fairbury, Nebraska. Bernard W. Nider died in Lincoln, Nebraska, on December 15, 2010, and was buried in Evergreen Home Cemetery at Beatrice, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing letters received by Bernard Nider shortly before and during his military service. The letters date from 1941-1944, and are mostly from female friends and former classmates. The letters describe local events, dances, etc., as well as news about mutual friends.
