BACKGROUND NOTE
Richard Bjorkman was born at Berg, Sweden, on November 18, 1859. He served in the Swedish Navy for eight years. After leaving the Swedish Navy he immigrated to the United States in 1884 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged in 1890. He moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where his brother George was living. Richard joined the Lincoln Fire Department. He married Theolene Swanson in Omaha, Nebraska, on September 17, 1892. In 1898 he re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Spanish-American War. After his discharge he returned to the Lincoln Fire Department, retiring as Captain in 1913. He then went to work for the First National Bank in Lincoln, retiring in 1935. Richard Bjorkman died in Lincoln on June 7, 1949.
Theolene Swanson was born in Winslow, Sweden, on September 25th, 1867. She immigrated to the United States with her brother and several friends in 1886. She spent time in Sutton, Edgar and Hastings, Nebraska, before taking a job in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1888. She married Richard Bjorkman in Omaha in 1892 and eventually had seven children.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of a family reminiscence typescript written by Helen Bjorkman Kincaide in 1948. The reminiscence discusses her parents, Richard and Theolene Bjorkman. The Bjorkmans were Swedish immigrants and Lincoln, Nebraska, residents from the 1880s-1940s.
