BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE



Britt Pryor was born in a dugout near Arapahoe, Nebraska, on December 25, 1889, the son of William and Mary E. Carson Pryor. As a young man, he engaged in the plasterers trade and married Hallie M. Utterback of Gering, Nebraska, on April 23, 1917. Pryor later moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he resided for the remainder of his life. He became very active in labor affairs and served as President of the Lincoln Central Labor Union for seven years and was President of the State Federation of Labor, 1935-1937. Pryor was later employed by the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District as its safety director and retired from this position in 1958. He died at his home in Lincoln on June 3, 1958. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE


This collection consists of three folders of manuscript material: 1) General Correspondence, 1934-1958; 2) Speeches; and 3) Miscellany. The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence and speeches relating to Britt Pryor’s activities as labor leader and as safety director for the Nebraska Public Power District. Additional materials relate to irrigation, and public power. Several letters of acknowledgement or introduction from prominent persons are included within the correspondence.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
