SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one reel of microfilm containing approximately 155 letters, telegrams, and postal cards written by Caroline Frey Winne, 1874-1880, and 1899, to friends and relatives in the East. Mrs. Winne, wife of army surgeon Charles Knickerbocker Winne, wrote of army life at Sidney Barracks, Nebraska, December 1874-November 1877, Fort McPherson, Nebraska, May 1879-May 1880. There are only two letters in 1878 from Fort McPherson. They pick up again in May 1879 at Omaha enroute to Fort Washakie, Wyoming. The Winne letters include descriptions and comments about army officials, government policies, hostilities with Indians, Indian ceremonies, conferences between the Army and Indians, medical facilities, housing, social events, food supplies, transportation and weather. On occasion when Mrs. Winne is ill, Dr. Winne sends notes to the Frey family in New York. Her letters average two per month.
