BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Champion Spaulding Chase, son of Clement and Olive (Spaulding) Chase, was born at Cornish, New Hampshire, on March 20, 1820. He attended Kimball Union Institute in Meridian, New Hampshire, and then studied law in Buffalo, New York. He moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1847, and the following year he married Mary S. Butterfield. In 1853 he was appointed Brigadier General of the Wisconsin State Militia. He served as president of the Racine, Wisconsin, Board of Education as well as a chairman of the Judiciary Committee of Wisconsin to help revise the laws of the state. A son, Clement (Champion Clement) was born in 1860. Champion Chase came to Nebraska in 1866. He served as the State Attorney General in 1869 and was elected mayor of Omaha in 1880. He died November 3, 1898 and is buried in Omaha’s Prospect Hill Cemetery.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one envelope containing newspaper clippings, speeches and addresses and other ephemera relating to Champion S. Chase and several members of the Chase family. Included are two bank books for Lula E. Chase (Mrs. Clement Chase) dating from 1916-1919) and tax returns for Clement Chase from 1917-1918. The bulk of the collection consists of published speeches and addresses by Champion S. Chase.
