BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

A native of Lincoln, Nebraska and a graduate of Lincoln High School, Channing R. Mann pursued a career in physical education. He received his professional training at the YMCA Training school (later Springfield College), Springfield, Mass. graduating in 1916. Mann’s first position was a YMCA Physical Training Director in Bennington, Vermont,1916-1917. From 1917-1919 he directed the Army YMCA program at Fort Jackson. In 1920 he became the first certified hygiene and physical training director of New York State. From 1920 until 1963 he served as Director of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in the public schools of Troy, New York. Throughout his career Mann was actively involved in various health and physical education organizations, as well as in the writing of various aspects of physical education planning.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in seven series: (1) Biographical Information; 2) Correspondence, 1918-1973; (3) Awards and Speeches; (4) Physical Education Booklets and Programs; (5) Photographs; (6) Springfield College Programs; and (7) Miscellany. This collection relates primarily to Channing R. Mann’s career in the physical education field.

Series 1 is comprised of a booklet entitled, “The Mann Brothers of Lincoln, Nebraska.” The careers of both Leslie (Les) Mann and Channing R. Mann are traced, with particular emphasis placed on the athletic career of Les Mann and Channing R. Mann’s work in physical education. Series 2 consists of correspondence received and written by Channing R. Mann. A few letters are from friends in Lincoln, Nebraska. Included in the correspondence is Mann’s plan for a program about “Pioneering Baseball on the Plains of Nebraska.” (1958) Series 3 consists of two speeches given by Mann, one on Physical Fitness and one in response to an award received from Springfield College in 1958. Also included is a citation for Mann’s services of 37 years with the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Booklets and programs on various aspects of physical education planning can be found in Series 4. These materials, many of which were authored or co-authored by Mann, were put out by the New York (or American) Association of Health, Physical education and Recreation. The photographs in Series 5 show family and friends, as well as physical education demonstrations. Series 6 is comprised primarily of programs for Springfield College’s 50-year reunion for the class of 1916. The miscellany of Series 7 includes clippings, certificates, game rules, health articles and obituaries of Florence (Mrs. Channing R.) Mann.
