BACKGROUND NOTE
Charles A. Story was a native of New York who settled in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He had served in the Civil War in Co. C, 186th Infantry, Pennsylvania for one year; 10 February 1864-14 August 1865. In 1879 he came to Nebraska with his family and located on a farm near the Stanley Post Office, a short distance southeast of Amherst, Nebraska. In 1885 the family consisted of Charles, age 42, his wife, Melvina, age 37 (and a native of New York); sons, Louis E., age 14; Fred B., age 11; and daughters Jennie D., age 10; Irene, age 15; and Mable, age 4.
All the children were born in Pennsylvania except Mable who was born in Nebraska. Jennie, Irene and Mabel all died in 1887. Another infant son, Charles A., died in 1884. Louis, left the farm in 1898 and started the W.H. Merrick & Co. merchandise store in Maxwell, Nebraska. Charles Augustus Story died on October 17, 1888, and is buried in Chester Rural Cemetery at Chester, Pennsylvania. Melvina Story is buried in Kearney Cemetery at Kearney, Nebraska. Charles A., Jennie, Irene and Mabel Story are all buried in Stanley Cemetery at Amherst, Nebraska. Louis Story died in 1955 and is buried in Plainview Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska. Fred Story died in 1948 and is buried in Valley View Cemetery at Torrington, Wyoming.

This collection consists of one reel of microfilm of a journal giving daily accounts of events from 1879-1881 on the Charles Augustus Story farm near Stanley, Buffalo County, Nebraska. It also contains some references through 1884.
