BACKGROUND NOTE

Carl and Wilhelmine Kostman emigrated from Germany and initially settled in eastern Iowa near Elkader.  Former schoolmates from Germany were living in Seward, Nebraska, and after corresponding, convinced Carl to move west and purchase land near Seward.  The family farmed eighty acres.  By 1880, the family had moved to Dawson County, Nebraska.  Wilhelmine died in 1907.  Carl eventually went to live with a daughter and her family in Minnesota.  Carl Kostman died in 1920.  Carl and Wilhelmine Kostman are buried in Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids, Iowa.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one folder containing a photocopy of the handwritten reminiscences of Carl Kostman as recorded by his son, Charles F. Kostman.  Charles’ comments are intermixed in the reminiscences.  The reminiscences describe frontier and pioneer life near Seward, Nebraska, land settlement, an overland journey west, seeing bison and other wildlife, etc.  Also included is a typed transcript of the handwritten reminiscences.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
