BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Charles Manderson moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1856 where he studied law. He served in the Civil War and then returned to Canton to resume his law practice. He moved to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1869 where he practiced law and served as the City Attorney for six years. Manderson was a member of the state Constitutional Conventions in 1871 and 1875. In 1883 the citizens of Nebraska elected Manderson to the U.S. Senate. He was reelected in 1888 and served until 1895. Manderson served as the vice president of the American Bar Association in 1899 and as president in 1900. Charles F. Manderson died in Liverpool, England, on September 28, 1911. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one box containing papers relating to Charles Manderson’s political and legal careers. Materials date from 1884-1902 and include various speeches and testimonials, a letterpress book, and a copy of Manderson’s will. Also included is some biographical information photocopied from the History of Stark County [Ohio].
