BACKGROUND NOTE

A native of DeWitt, Nebraska, Clarence C. Becker served with the 355th Infantry, 89th Division during World War I and saw action at St. Mihiel, France. Becker had a variety of jobs throughout his life. Prior to and after military service, he did advertising work for Lincoln newspapers. He began his electric utility career with Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power before World War I. Clarence Becker was the first clerk of the Lincoln Municipal Court, serving in that position from 1925-1928. He also served as an adult probation officer and jury commissioner before being named as Lincoln district credit manager for the Consumers Public Power District in 1941. Becker held this position until he retired in 1961. Upon retirement, Becker continued his active involvement with various Lincoln organizations such as the American Legion, the local Society of the 355th Infantry Association, Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis Club. Clarence C. Becker died at age 83 on January 9, 1978. He was survived by his wife, Harriet, and his two sons, Richard and Robert.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of two boxes of manuscript material arranged in three series: 1) American Legion, 1924-1971; 2) 355th Infantry Association, 1931-1973; and 3) Redeemer Lutheran Church (Lincoln, Neb.), 1936-1972. The material in this collection relates to these three organizations in which Clarence Becker participated as a member and officer.

The American Legion materials of Series 1 pertain to Lincoln Post #3. Included are constitutions and by-laws, membership lists, correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial reports, membership drive statistics, programs, and policy statements. All of this material is arranged by year. Series 2 consists of materials relating to the 355th Infantry Association. Included are newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, correspondence, souvenirs, and minutes. Much of the material relates to the Association’s annual convention. The files are arranged by year. Redeemer Lutheran Church of Lincoln files comprise Series 3. The files, arranged chronologically, contain minutes, financial reports, newsletters, architectural plans, annual reports, membership directories, anniversary materials, and clippings.

Note:  American Legion newspapers were removed from the collection for microfilming. Photographs were transferred to the Photograph Department.
