The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) is an organization composed of women who are descended from an ancestor “who came to reside in an American Colony before 1776, and whose services were rendered during the Colonial Period.” The organization “promotes appreciation for the people, places and events that led to the formation and development of our country.” The national headquarters are at Dumbarton House in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. The NSCDA is comprised of forty-four corporate/state societies with more than 15,000 members. The Nebraska chapter or society, officially known as the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in Nebraska (NSCDANE), was established in 1908. The NSCDANE has been active in various projects relating to historic preservation, restoration and the interpretation of historic sites. Some projects have included funding for restoration work at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Omaha and the Ferguson House in Lincoln, as well as funding for “The First Nebraskans” exhibit at the Nebraska History Museum, and the “Life on the Prairie” exhibit at the Joslyn Art Museum.
