BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Born in Oakland, California on October 14, 1946, David R. Newell graduated from Bancroft Public High School in 1965. He received an A.A. degree from Norfolk Junior College in 1967 and a B.S. in Education from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1971. Newell served in Viet Nam from 1969-1971. He married Arlene Paider on March 30, 1974 and had two children.

Newell served as the State President and National Committeeman for the Nebraska Young Democrats and the administrative assistant to the Director of Administrative Services. He also served as executive director of the Nebraska Association of Homes for the Aging. He was elected to the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature on November 2, 1976. Newell represented northeast Douglas County (District 13) from 1977-1985.

Newell is a self-employed real estate investor and manager and is currently serving on the Board of Governors for the Metropolitan Community College in Omaha (as of 2010).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of four boxes of legislative bill files kept/endorsed by David Newell during his service in the Nebraska Legislature. The files date from 1977-1984 and are arranged by date and bill number order.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
