SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This diary entitled, “Diary of Our March From the Time We Left Washington, D.C.” dates from 1865. The author, an unidentified soldier serving with the 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry, left Washington, D.C. with his regiment on June 14, 1865 and traveled by railroad through Petersburg, Virginia and Cincinnati, Ohio to St. Louis, Missouri. From there, he proceeded up the Missouri River to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He then marched from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Kearny, Nebraska, arriving there on August 16th. After a week at Fort Kearny, the troops scouted near Cottonwood Springs and Plum Creek, Nebraska. The diary’s author notes stops made during the trip from Washington, D.C. to Fort Kearny. On the march from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Kearny and the subsequent scouting in Nebraska, he indicates miles traveled each day and locations of encampments.
