BACKGROUND NOTE
Born on June 30, 1920, at Keystone, Nebraska, Donald Francis McGinley was the son of George and Margaret (Thalken) McGinley. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, McGinley enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force as a cryptographer. After the war he attended Georgetown University, receiving a law degree in 1949. He returned to Nebraska and practiced law with the McGinley-Lane law firm in Ogallala.
Donald McGinley served in the Nebraska Legislature from 1955 to 1959 and again from 1963 to 1965. From 1959 to 1960 he served as the U.S. House Representative from Nebraska’s 4th District. From 1983 to 1987 McGinley served as Nebraska’s Lieutenant Governor under Robert Kerrey. He married Evaleen Mary Mueller in 1947. After her death in 1974 he married Nancy Halligan. Donald F. McGinley died on July 6, 2005. He is buried in the Ogallala Cemetery at Ogallala, Nebraska, next to his first wife.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one box containing three folders of papers relating to Donald F. McGinley’s political and public service careers. The bulk of the correspondence in folder one dates from 1959 and consists of correspondence with constituents regarding legislative bills. The second folder contains materials relating to Selective Service State Director training in 2003. The last folder of miscellaneous items includes biographical information, certificates, and various other ephemera.
