BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Edward Yarton, born September 15, 1843, served with the 9th Regiment, New York Cavalry during the Civil War until his discharge in 1863. He was recalled and fought with the 76th Regiment, New York Infantry until May 5, 1864, when he was wounded and captured during the Battle of the Wilderness. He was imprisoned at Andersonville until 1865. Yarton was discharged at Rochester, New York, and came to Nebraska probably in the late 1860s. Edward Yarton died in Grand Island, Nebraska, on March 20, 1908.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of five folders of material including correspondence, 1876-1917; financial records, 1872-1971; minutes of the Knights of Sherwood Forest (Benson, Neb.), 1885-1887; pension claim documents, 1863-1917; and miscellaneous items. The majority of material in this collection relates to Edward Yarton’s letters and applications for a government pension due to his military service, and back rations owed for his period of captivity. Correspondents include: Gilbert M. Hitchcock, 1907; and C.B. Wadleigh, a Washington claim attorney, 1904. Also included in the collection is a set of minutes, dating from 1885-1887, for the Knights of Sherwood Forest, a fraternal organization in Benson, Nebraska.INVENTORY
