BACKGROUND NOTE



The Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Dakota City, erected in 1860, is the oldest standing Lutheran church structure in Nebraska. The Sunday School was begun in 1859 by C.F. Eckhart, a member of the Lutheran Church in Dakota City. The Lutheran Church met in Dakota City for a number of years but no records earlier than 1867 have been found.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of six volumes and several loose items of material arranged in four series: 1) Sunday School records, 1874-1915; 2) Home Department records, 1906-1924; 3) Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor records, 1890-1898; and 4) Miscellaneous material. The material in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church collection relates to the Sunday School records of that church, giving attendance, membership rolls, minutes, and other information.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
