Frequently Asked Questions

What is ArchivesSpace?

This database contains finding aids describing archival collections held by the Nebraska State Historical Society. The collections include personal papers, business and organizational records, government records, photographs, audiovisual materials, maps, and more.

How can I utilize ArchivesSpace?

You can search ArchivesSpace using keywords such as names, topics, or places. It will show you everything in our archives related to your search.

I am new to ArchivesSpace. Where should I begin?

Enter a search term and see what you can find! Or browse by collection, topic, or name. If you have found something you’re interested in looking at, send us an email and include a link to the page you’re looking at reference@hn.libanswers.com.

Can I save a finding aid to view at a later date?

Sure! You can download a specific collection by clicking the “Download PDF” icon at the top of the collection page. Or you could bookmark the page with your browser.

How can I view images linked in a finding aid?

ArchivesSpace does not have digitized images, but some collections may include links to our digital archive called Preservica. We are working on linking these two systems so they are easier to search. In the meantime, search Preservica to access digitized archival materials.

What won’t I find in ArchivesSpace?

You won’t find the items themselves in ArchivesSpace, it is just a list of what we have. Some things are digitized and some things are not. If you have found something you’re interested in looking at, send us an email and include a link to the page you’re looking at reference@hn.libanswers.com.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
