HISTORICAL NOTE

The Farmers State Bank of Boelus, Nebraska was organized in March, 1917 by Charles F. Kruse, Mark Holm, Adolph F. Nielsen, Olaf Nelson, and Carl Theo. Krogh. Organized to carry on a commercial banking business, the bank was authorized with capital stock of $25,000. A victim of the farm depression of the 1920’s and the stock market crash of 1929, the bank went bankrupt and closed its doors in 1929.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of customer financial statements, 1923-1926. These records provide information on the financial condition of approximately ten customers of the Farmers State Bank of Boelus. Included is the customer’s name and information on assets and liabilities. Under assets, the statements provide information on personal property, such as livestock owned and their value and crops on hand and their value. Amount and value of real estate owned is also recorded. Liabilities, such as money owed to banks or individuals and other debts, are listed. One form, filled out for the use of the Grand Island National Bank, is also included in this collection.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
