HISTORICAL NOTE

The First Presbyterian Church of Nebraska City had its beginnings in the summer of 1855 when the Rev. H. M. Giltner began his labors as a missionary. The congregation was formally organized in November of that year. Early services were held at the Nebraska City and the Kearney City Hotels.

In 1857 the first building was erected. It served until 1902 when the present church building was built on that same site. The charter members numbered fifteen. In 1878 a great revival meeting added twenty to the congregation. In 1908, in accordance with a vote of the General Assembly of Presbyterian Churches, the Nebraska City Cumberland Presbyterian Church was united with this congregation.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of Nebraska City First Presbyterian Church consist of eleven volumes on one reel of microfilm arranged in two series: 1) Registers, 1855-1930; and 2) Minutes, 1855-1982.

The registers contain lists of pastors, deacon, trustees, members, baptisms, marriages, and deaths. The minutes are those of the sessions, the board, and the congregational meetings. In both series some of the information from the earliest books is re-copied into later ones.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
