BACKGROUND NOTE



The Forward League was organized in 1917 by the Germans from Russia group in Lincoln, Nebraska to demonstrate their full support of the war effort against Germany during World War I, and their loyalty to the U.S.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of correspondence, reminiscences, and interview notes, 1961-1962. The materials relate to the founding and purpose of the Forward League. The correspondence and reminiscences are the work of William F. Urbach. Mrs. William F. Urbach took notes of an interview with Alex Wekesser on October 12, 1961. He was the brother of the League’s founder, Dr. Henry P. Wekesser, and an active participant in the League’s activities. The materials are only available as photocopies.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
