BACKGROUND NOTE



Born November 18, 1893 at Cheyenne, Wyoming, Frank O. Foster entered into military service at Crawford, Nebraska, in 1917.  He served until November of 1918.  He and his wife Ruby were married on August 29, 1932 at Absarokee, Montana.  The Fosters resided in Story, Wyoming, where Frank worked for the Yale Oil Company from 1932-1955.  As an Army reservist, Foster was recalled to duty in 1942 and served until 1951.  For a time he served at the Prisoner of War Camp at Atlanta, Nebraska.



Foster was a member of the Elks and Masons and was a charter member of the Sheridan, Wyoming, American Legion.  Foster died at the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital on February 11, 1966.  He is buried at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Sheridan, Wyoming.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of a scrapbook and 0.2 cu.ft. of military orders, correspondence and ephemera relating to the military service of Frank O. Foster.  The materials date from ca. 1918-1954.  The materials cover Foster’s time serving at the POW camp at Atlanta, Neb. from ca. 1943-1945.

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
