BACKGROUND NOTE



Incorporated as a nonprofit corporation on November 28, 2000, the Friends of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial was established to assist in fund-raising and event planning for Nebraska’s Lewis and Clark Bicentennial commemoration. According to the Articles of Incorporation, the main purposes of the corporation were as follows:



1) assist in the observance of Nebraska’s bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition; 2) cooperate with national, regional, statewide, and local events promoting the bicentennial; 3) plan, assist, coordinate, or conduct bicentennial events; 4) engage in fund-raising activities, including revenue-earning enterprises and the solicitation of grants, gifts, and donations; 5) promote public education concerning the Lewis and Clark Expedition; 6) assist in the coordination of State of Nebraska interagency participation in the observance and work with appropriate federal entities such as the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and the United States Army; 7) assist in the appointment of various local and regional advisory committees; 8) assist the Nebraska Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission in the performance of its duties; and 9) perform any other related duties.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of the records of the Friends of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. The bulk of the collection consists of financial records relating to the corporation and the various activities and events scheduled in commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Also included in the collection are articles of incorporation, bylaws, minutes of meetings, etc.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
