BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1894, George E. Grimes entered the University of Nebraska in 1914. In order to pay for his college education, Grimes taught school on the Rosebud reservation at Berkley, South Dakota from 1912-1914. In 1917, before beginning his senior year, George volunteered for the U.S. Army. He was sent to France with Company K of the 95th Infantry Division in August of 1917. He served as a tank operations instructor at the Inter-Allied Tank Center at Recloses, France. At the end of the war, Grimes was assigned to the newly established American University at Beaune, where he taught journalism under the direction of Colonel Milton Moore Fogg. He returned to the United States in March of 1919.
Prior to shipping off to France, Grimes married Eva Miller, whom he had met while attending the University of Nebraska. After the war, both George and Eva worked as reporters for the Omaha World Herald. After a time, George went to work in the editorial department. In 1939 George became managing editor of the Omaha World Herald. He left the Omaha World Herald in 1943 to manage the Chicago edition of the Wall Street Journal. In 1945, George and Eva and another associate purchased the Press-Courier, a small daily newspaper in Oxnard, California. Under their management, and with the help of their sons, the paper was a success. Due to George’s failing health, George and Eva decided to sell the Press-Courier in 1962.
George Grimes died in 1964. Eva Grimes returned to Omaha where she died in 1991 at the age of 95.
