BACKGROUND NOTE

Born New Hampshire in 1841, George Francis Blanchard served in the 14^th New Hampshire Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War.  Blanchard came to Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska around 1866.  He married Maria Holbrook on January 23, 1868.  He served as Dodge County commissioner from 1869 to 1872.  He then served as state senator and president of the senate from 1877 to 1879.  From 1880 to 1885, Blanchard worked as an Indian trader in Dakota Territory.  Blanchard returned to Nebraska in 1885, where he eventually served as clerk of the city council in Fremont.  By 1900, the couple had moved to Arkansas.  George Francis Blanchard died on January 6, 1925, in Washington County, Arkansas.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box containing correspondence written to/by George F. Blanchard.  The bulk of the letters are written between Blanchard and Maria Holbrook (his fiancé), and his siblings.  The letters date between 1865 and 1874.
