BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
George H. Van Horne, the son of William H. and Elizabeth Howe Van Horne, was born in Washtenaw County, Michigan on March 30, 1854. He was educated in the county schools and in the Manchester (Michigan) High School. During his youth, Van Horne engaged in farming and later taught school in Michigan, Iowa, and Nebraska. George H. Van Horne came to Nebraska in April of 1875 and established his residence at Beatrice in Gage County. He purchased a farm and during the ensuing ten years intermittently engaged in farming and in teaching in the public schools. In September of 1888 he assumed a position in the Beatrice Post Office, and before his death, had become Superintendent of Mails. George H. Van Horne married Mary Shear of New York on June 27, 1889, and the couple adopted one child, Leslie, a nephew of Mrs. Van Horne.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one item, the 1875 diary of George H. Van Horne. The diary relates to Van Horne’s activities as a school teacher near Iowa City, Iowa, in early 1875; his journey to Beatrice, Nebraska, in April of that year; his work as a farm laborer in the summer of 1875; and to his resumption of school teaching in District 11, Gage County in November of 1875. Of primary interest are Van Horne’s introspective entries regarding his daily activities as a school teacher, and his frequent references to his participation in the local literary and debating society.
