BACKGROUND NOTE



George Heman Walker was born at Weeping Water, Nebraska, on June 25, 1881.  He attended school in Norfolk, and attended Nebraska University where he gained his medical degree in 1908.  Walker served as a captain with the American Expeditionary Force in the 49th Base Hospital during World War I.  He was a member of the Nebraska State Medical Association and the Lancaster County Medical Association for 50 years.  George Heman Walker died on June 2, 1960.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of three boxes of papers relating to the life and career of Dr. George H. Walker.  The bulk of the collection relates to the Walker’s service in the A. E. F. during World War I, with specific reference to the 49th Base Hospital.  Also included in the collection are daily appointment and account books, some correspondence, certificates and licenses, receipts, orders, and a record book for the Alumni Association of the Lincoln Sanitarium Training School for Nurses.  The materials in the collection date from 1908 to 1949.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
