BACKGROUND NOTE



Born in Michigan in 1867, by 1898 George J. Smith was living in Denton, Nebraska.  On April 28, 1898, he enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard and served with Co. H, 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, during the Spanish-American War.  George J. Smith died of typhoid fever in the Philippines on March 13, 1899.  George J. Smith is buried in North Holman Cemetery at Lebanon, Missouri.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of a diary kept by George J. Smith while serving in the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War.  Information in the diary appears to date between April and August of 1898.  The entries document camp life, as well as several battles he witnessed.  Also included is a typed transcription of the diary.

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
