BACKGROUND NOTE

George N. (Nate) Bragg received his first radio operator’s license on October 23, 1925. For close to fifty years, Bragg operated on his own amateur radio stations in Blue Springs, Liberty, Peru, and Trenton, Nebraska, and in Concordia, Kansas. For a brief period of time he was also manager of the Majestic Theatre of Blue Springs, Nebraska. He died on January 26, 1975.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in four series: 1) Correspondence, 1925-1929, 1954-1963; 2) Broadcasting Materials, 1926-1928; 3) Certificates, 1920-1974; and 4) Miscellany. This collection relates to the amateur radio broadcasting career of George N. Bragg.

The Correspondence, 1925-1929 and 1954-1962, of Series 1, consists of postcards and a few letters confirming reception by others of Bragg’s amateur radio stations. Time, date, location of reception are shown, as well as quality of reception, technical information, and the name of the individual and call letters of the station picking up Bragg’s broadcast. Series 2 contains Broadcasting Materials, 1926-1928 kept by George N. Bragg. Included is a volume entitled Radio-Tricians Notes, which was part of a correspondence course designed by the National Radio Institute of Washington, D.C. Bragg’s Amateur Radio Log which recorded the date, time, and station called or station calling is also part of this series.

The Certificates, 1920-1974, of Series 3 consist of Bragg’s radio licenses, membership cards for various radio organizations, and special service awards. The Miscellany of Series 4 includes a newsletter from the Homestead Radio Club of Beatrice, Nebraska, and two technical drawings of radio workings.

Note:  A photograph of Bragg at his radio was transferred to the photo collections. An issue of the Majestic Theatre news, 1931, was placed in the Nebraska Theatre Program Collection [RG3673].
