BACKGROUND NOTE

The first Lutheran congregation in Elmwood was organized by William Schick, a nearby farmer, in 1891. Services were held in the Schick home and then in the GAR Hall until a church was built in 1892.

Services were held in German until 1918 when the congregation was reorganized as an English Evangelical Lutheran Church. In September 1920 services were discontinued and the church property turned over to the Evangelical Synod of the Lutheran Church in Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection of the Elmwood, Nebraska German Evangelical Lutheran Church consists of a photocopy of one volume in one series: 1) Records, 1898-1920.

This volume contains two constitutions in German and one in English and various lists of members. The baptisms, marriages and burials are from the last years of the church’s existence.

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
