BACKGROUND NOTE
The Gockley family settled in Red Willow County, Nebraska, locating near McCook in 1885. The eldest son, Thomas Franklin Gockley, was born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania on December 27, 1865. He married Martha (Mattie) Carolyn Boyer on October 4, 1892 at Danbury, Nebraska. Two of their three children, Elma and Harry, reached maturity. Around 1900, Thomas F. and Mattie settled near Marion. They remained there until 1917, when they moved to Peru. In 1946 Thomas sold the Peru home and purchased one in Bellevue, where he resided until his death on January 31, 1949. Martha Gockley died on September 16, 1936.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of four folders of manuscript material arranged in four series: 1) Correspondence, 1882-1888; 2) Manuscripts, ca. 1891; 3) Day Book, 1893-1896; and 4) Miscellany. The bulk of this collection consists of letters received by Mattie Boyer Gockley of Red Willow County, Nebraska, 1882-1888. The letters from friends and relatives in Iowa and Kansas, mention family and neighborhood news, but contain little information relative to Nebraska. Some information about Christmas celebrations can be found in them. The manuscript in Series 2 and the daybook of Series 3 contain household recipes, probably collected by Mattie Boyer Gockley. The remainder of the daybook includes a daily ledger of household items bought and sold, 1893-1896.
