BACKGROUND NOTE
Grover Cleveland Alexander, one of the greatest pitchers to have played major league baseball, was born in Elba, Nebraska on February 26, 1887. During his 19-year professional career, Alexander compiled 373 victories, a National League record he shares with Christy Mathewson. Other records he holds include the rookie record for victories (28); the National League mark for shutouts (90); and the season record for shutouts (16). For a more detailed look at Alexander’s life and career, see the Spring, 1990 issue of Nebraska History for the article “His Own Worst Enemy: The Rise and Fall of Grover Cleveland Alexander.” Grover Cleveland Alexander died on November 4, 1950.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists mainly of newspaper clippings, 1950-1952; 1969 and undated, relating to Grover Cleveland Alexander. Included is an advertisement for “The Winning Team,” Warner Brother’s 1952 film biography of Alexander; and newspaper publicity for an exhibition game in Aurora featuring Alexander vs. Clarence Mitchell, another major league ballplayer from Nebraska. Other articles provide biographical information about Alexander. Two letters written by Alexander to his niece are also included in the collection.
