BACKGROUND NOTE
Harry E. Flansburg was the son of Claude Copley and Clara (Wilkinson) Flansburg. His father was a prominent corporate attorney of Nebraska. He had come from Illinois to Nebraska in September of 1879 and settled in Harlan County near Alma. He practiced law in Harlan County until 1892 when he moved to Lincoln. He continued his practice in Lincoln until his death in August of 1934.
Harry had been born in Harlan County on February 12, 1885. He took his pre-medical training at the University of Nebraska (1907) and then attended Rush Medical College in Chicago, graduating in 1909. He was on the staff of Cook County Hospital in Chicago until moving back to Nebraska. Dr. Flansburg began the practice of medicine in Lincoln in 1912.
In 1917, Harry was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served with the A.E.F. at Base Hospital #49 in Allereye, France and an evacuation hospital at the front. He was stationed at the Hospital Center in Sayenoy, France in 1919. At the time of his death in February of 1980, Dr. Flansburg was one of two survivors of the “Last Man’s Club” formed by 14 physicians and a dentist from the Lincoln area who had served at Base Hospital #49 in France. The last survivor was Dr. A.D. Munger.
After his military service, Dr. Flansburg returned to Lincoln to practice. He was a member of Lincoln General Hospital staff when it opened in 1925. During his career he was president of the Lancaster County Medical Society and the Lincoln Public Health Advisory Council, and a fellow in the American College of Physicians.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection includes a diary, a transcription of Flansburg’s 1974 interview, and printed material, all related to Flansburg’s experiences in the Medical Corps during World War I. The diary chronicles Flansburg’s military duty from his transport overseas through his service at both Base Hospital #49 and an evacuation hospital at the front. Military service memorabilia such as a pay voucher, an officer’s record book, menus, and programs are also included.
