BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born at Ogdensburg, New York, on December 5, 1844, Henry H. Haven was one of nine children. At sixteen he enlisted in Co. F, 16th Regiment, New York Volunteers, and saw action at Harper’s Ferry, Bolivar Heights, Winchester, Cedar Mountains, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Losing an arm as the result of an injury suffered at Gettysburg, Haven received an honorable discharge in October of 1868.
Returning to De Kalb, New York, Haven married Mary E. Putnam, and in 1873 they moved to Nebraska, and settled at Gibbon in Buffalo County. Henry served in the Nebraska Legislature from 1883-1885. In 1888 they moved to Livingston, New Jersey, where Haven taught in the public school for several years.
Henry H. Haven died at Livingston, New Jersey on February 3, 1923. He was survived by his wife and three daughters, Mrs. Maidie A. Parkhurst of Livingston, Miss Lena O. Haven of Staten Island, and Mrs. Luella H. Singer of Mt. Holly. Henry H. Haven is buried in the family plot in Union Cemetery, De Kalb, New York.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection contains various papers relating to Henry H. Haven of Gibbon, Nebraska (and Livingston, New Jersey). The materials date from 1882-1892 and include land deeds and warrants from the Union Pacific Railway Company, as well as some financial records of money owed. In letters written to Reuben Gardner (DeKalb Junction, New York), Haven touches on the 1886 Nebraska election, daily living, cost of things, and the 1886 and 1887 blizzards. Also included is an obituary for Haven.
