BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
A native of Staplehurst, Nebraska, Horace S. Seymour enlisted in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on June 27, 1917, signing up with Company B, 1st Iowa Engineers, National Guard. As a member of the 109th Engineers, 34th National Guard Division, Seymour trained for front-line service at Camp Cody, New Mexico and Camp Lee, Virginia. He never reached the front-line but Seymour was involved in hospital construction at the Mesves-Buley Base Hospital Center, the largest base hospital in France, located at Nieve. Seymour reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant before being discharged in 1919. In later years Seymour served as Secretary-Treasurer of Company B, 109th Engineers Association and the Regimental Unit 109th Engineers Association. He died in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 31, 1984.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection contains three folders of manuscript material: 1) Diary, 1917-1919; 2) Military certificates, 1917-1919; and 3) Miscellany, 1985. This material relates to the military career of Horace S. Seymour, who served as a combat engineer during World War I.
Folder 1 contains a typescript of a diary, 1917-1919, describing Horace S. Seymour’s experiences as a member of the 109th Engineers, 34th National Guard Division. Seymour described his months at training camp, his trip across the Atlantic to the war zone, and his experiences in France. He discussed the work assigned to various companies at the Mesves-Buley Base Hospital Center.
Folder 2 contains photocopies of military certificates, 1917-1919, received by Horace S. Seymour as warrant, commissions, and discharge papers during his military career.
Folder 3 includes newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other materials pertaining to distribution of association funds after Seymour’s death.
